Janet Mills

Janet Trafton Mills (born December 30, 1947) is an American politician and lawyer serving since 2019 as the 75th governor of Maine. She previously served as the 55th and 57th attorney general of Maine and as a member of the Maine House of Representatives. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Mills was first elected attorney general by the Maine Legislature in 2009, serving until 2011. When Democrats regained control of the legislature, she was elected again in 2013, serving three more two-year terms. In 2018, Mills was elected governor, defeating Republican Shawn Moody and independent Terry Hayes after winning a crowded primary. She was reelected in 2022. On October 14, 2025, Mills announced her candidacy in the 2026 United States Senate election in Maine, seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge incumbent Republican Susan Collins. She suspended her campaign on April 30, 2026.
